Nvidia, Trixie, legacy drivers

Count me in among those who used the Tesla 470 drivers and now am totally out 
of luck as they've been discontinued in Trixie. Nouveau is proving to be 
absolutely useless, both on XFCE and MATE. Can I at least compile from upstream 
or are we just totally and utterly out of luck?
