Dear Debian Team,

First of all, I want to express my gratitude for the incredible work you do
with Debian. It’s a powerful and flexible distribution, and I’ve been
enjoying it as I transition from Windows to Linux. However, I’ve
encountered a few challenges that I believe could be addressed to improve
the user experience for newcomers, particularly those who are switching to
Linux for everyday use.

One of the things that surprised me is that Debian ships with components
like ssh and related services (such as sslh) by default, which are
primarily used for server purposes. For most users who are using Debian as
a desktop or workstation, these tools are unnecessary and can create
additional complexity and potential security concerns.

Many users, especially those new to Linux, may not have the expertise to
properly configure SSH, which increases the risk of misconfigurations and
security issues. Moreover, having these server-oriented components enabled
by default might discourage new users who are looking for a smooth
transition from Windows to Linux without unnecessary complexity.

With this in mind, I would like to suggest considering the creation of a
separate Debian build specifically tailored for workstations. This version
could have a minimal set of server services enabled by default and be more
streamlined and user-friendly for everyday desktop use.

I believe this would make Debian more approachable for a wider audience and
encourage more users to adopt it on personal machines.

Thank you for taking the time to read this suggestion. I hope my feedback
can help make Debian even better.

Best regards,
Oleg
