I personally would not be telling novices to install packages from testing, sid or from source just to work out what desktop environment they are in. At the best of times it seems like a trip into the weeds. Although as this thread is going much like every other Gene thread I have ever seen, we probably will never get to even that first step before it cycles around again, no matter what is attempted.
