Have you tried <shift><control>f? On my system, doing so toggles between full screen mode and, well, not full screen mode. (Sometimes when I'm typing and try to type an uppercase f, it seems I manage to hit both <ctrl> and <shift> with my pinkie and end up switching to full screen unintentionally.)
