As I recall, Intel has played with virtualization support a lot. Disable virtualization on some low end CPUs just to piss people off. Or really, to "differentiate the different product lines" or some such marketing bullshit. Computer makers do this too. Low end laptop? Let's disable the power saving features so the battery life sucks.
