My bet is on: The grub-install was done to wrong boot disk. (And "wrong
boot disk" being not the boot disk.)

Thanks for reporting back.  Yes, a re-install gets a Linux system
back to a working Linux system.  For what it is worth: Installing Linux
did learn me a lot.
