Would this be consistent with the observation that I can "cure" the
problem by using the other mouse? That is, if one mouse wheel is
magnifying, by scrolling with the other's wheel, both revert to
scrolling.
I don't think so, but I don't know enough about Linux' USB code to know
what kinds of errors are likely to happen.
