You wrote that you're "
using the recommended jdk from Blackdown", but I'm not sure which one
that might be. You'll need to get the one that matches the version of
gcc that you're using. There are two sdk files, one for gcc2, and one
for gcc3. Whichever one you downloaded, you might try the other one.
1.4.2-rc1 for gcc 3.2; according to what was written in here for Firebird
0.7
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/devel/lang/java/blackdown.org/JDK-1.4.2/i386/rc1/j2sdk-1.4.2-rc1-linux-i586-gcc3.2.bin
Oops; I mean:
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/devel/lang/java/blackdown.org/JDK-1.4.1/i386/01/j2sdk-1.4.1-01-linux-i586-gcc3.2.bin <ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/devel/lang/java/blackdown.org/JDK-1.4.1/i386/01/j2sdk-1.4.1-01-linux-i586-gcc3.2.bin>
When I copied/pasted that previous link, I just went through the same motions I did when I installed it to get to the file location, only I didn't realize there was a 1.2 version out now and so my mouse-manuevering finger clicked on the wrong link.

Be aware, and this might be your problem, I had to change permissions on the /usr/local/j2sdk1.4.2 directory in order for my user to be able to read the directory:
enjae[westk]:/usr/local> chown -R root.staff j2sdk1.4.2
enjae[westk]:/usr/local> chmod go+rx j2sdk1.4.2
enjae[westk]:/usr/local> ls -l
