I'm running Debian 12.8 with MATE 1.26.0 [Caja file manager]
I've been running MATE since it was released as alternative to Gnome3.
Over time /home/richard/Desktop has had many additions and deletions.
The combination of that with manually manually arranging icons related to a current project resulted in *CHAOS* ;/!

This morning it was particularly bad.
I right-clicked on its background an (re?)discovered "Organize Desktop by Name". The result was generally pleasing.

I liked:
  1. the row and column spacing.
     Is there some way that when manually rearranging icons they be
     forced to the same grid? {i.e. icons forced to not overlap}
  2. file folders appearing first. Alphabetical order is logical
     default.

Arranging individual files alphabetically is a reasonable default.

On my machine, would it possible to arrange them by extension &/or creation date?

TIA
