Which way should other application guess what viewer your prefer?
I have seen a person who was very proud due to inventing a trick with
specific order of installing applications. I am still in doubts if it
may change priorities reliably.
If your desktop environment does not have a GUI dialog to set
preferences for specific file types (my guess based on "display" from
imagemagick that you may have no DE) then you need to write a
mimeapps.list file yourself, either a system-wide or for a specific
users. It should help with XDG applications.
In addition you may need to adjust mailcap and mailcap.order files for
tools like "see".
