To start recording a keyboard macro: Tools → Keyboard Macros → Record Macro... (Ctrl+Shift+K). The plugin will record every key presses until you end recording.
*ERROR* -- no entry for "Keyboard Macros" under "Tools" https://docs.kde.org/stable5/en/kate/kate/plugins.html says:
Kate Application Plugins Kate plugins are additional functions for the Kate editor. They can add extra menus and shortcuts, and extend Kate's features. You can install as many or as few as you like, from within Kate. Open Kate's configuration dialog with Settings → Configure Kate... Select Application → Plugins to choose the wanted plugins.
*ERROR* -- There is no reference to "Applications"/"Plugins"/"Macros" Though I've been using computers since early 60's, I'm a KATE newbie - what have I missed ????????? Are macros available in the Debian release of KATE? TIA
