Works fine here. I've got software raid running with smartmontools (it was "smartsuite" in woody, I believe) on three boxes. raid0 and raid5 are doing just fine. Soft raid doesn't do any low-level magic with the source volumes, essentially treating each volume as a logical file. I can't think of a reason to suspect problems.
