I have Debian with KDE running just fine on an external monitor. When I
need to use my webcam I switch the display configuration to unified output
and the same image is displayed on both monitors. I have KDE configured to
not suspend when the lid is closed if a monitor is connected. Also under
battery and brightness I have "manually block sleep and screen locking"
checked.

What desktop environment are you using?

Is the external monitor still plugged in?

How is the external monitor configured: unified, extended or primary?

You say you disabled suspend via grub? Have you tried disabling suspend in
the BIOS? It will be S2 and S3 in BIOS.

When the device suspends I take it that you are not able to wake the device
properly by pressing the power button?
