I have partially solved the problem. Actually, there were an incorrect symbolic link for the kernel image and my last modifications concerning the alsa stuff were not taken into accouns.
Now the ALSA modules load perfectlyt but it seems that the acces to the ac codec is bugged. /etc/init.d/alsa/restart says AC'97 0:0 doens not respond - RESET As far as I have seen in the kernel mailing lists this seems quite a common problem and I don't know how to solve it.
