What does cat /etc/debian_version and cat /etc/apt/apt.conf say ? In case you are rather a newbie, why not apt-get install netselect followed by cd /etc/apt/ and netselect-apt <version> with <version> being the one you actually want to run ? This is a great tool to collect the relevant mirrors and identify the 'closest' to your place. Take care, it will overwrite your existing sources.list; so make a cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.old before !
