I think the switch is the least of your problems for now. Please tell us: - what else is connected to that switch - if the switch has lights for its Ethernet ports: which ones are on - what happens if you open a console on your hp6830 and enter each of those three commands - ip link show - ip addr show - ip route show - what IP addresses have the other machines connected to the switch I think someone (whether gent or not) can take it up from there.
