I would encourage you to reply to the debian-user list as a whole, so that others may be able to chime in. When you say "safe mode", I assume you mean that you're choosing the "Safe Mode" option from the first GRUB boot screen menu? If you let the machine boot normally, do you get to a login prompt at all? If so, is it on a text-only screen, or a graphical screen?
