No, that's fully believable. It's a fairly specialized knowledge set, which a Computer Science student may not possess. What's more worrying is the vagueness of the help request. You'd think such a student would provide at least a modicum of detail, like which model computer they're using, which version of Debian they tried to download (and install??) and what the error message said.
