Try removing procmail from the equation as a start (just use the default mailbox) and see if that solves the problem. Will at list give a direction. Also whats the mail program you are using (exim/exim4/sendmail/qmail/ etc.)? Try opening the actual mailbox with an editor before you open it with mutt and see if the first line is there to begin with.
