...or learn how to access your "dead" disk without booting from it (live system, rescue, extracting the disk and mounting it on other system -- choices are... panoramic here; most of the time you'll need some extra hardware, a prepared, lowly USB stick might suffice :-) > "sudo -s" gives you a shell as root.
