clamscan --move=directory fails "Invalid argument."

clamscan is failing to move files from the maildir folder to a virus
folder.  I think this is due to the filenames containing characters such as
        =
        ,
        :
these names are automatically assigned by exim4 when putting the mail
into the new directory and by courier when moving them.  Can someone
help with this?
