Simply open the Markdown file and press Ctrl+K, V to get a live side-by-side preview.
If you want something command-line based, then you need to convert the Markdown code to code that some other renderer will understand. Pandoc (https://packages.debian.org/buster/pandoc) can do that for you with a simple "pandoc -o README.html README.md" or "pandoc -o README.pdf README.md" etc.
