I don't actually know why home/end would work on some systems and not others, but if you get in the habit of using CTRL-a and CTRL-e instead, I _think_ that should work consistently. I suppose you could be clever and keymap home and end to CTRL-a and CTRL-e if you wanted, but I don't know the details, and that might be annoying if you try to use home and end in other contexts.
