Bumping versions in stable is a no-go for Debian (Stable Release Managers), with very few exceptions for very specific packages that have few or no reverse dependencies (Firefox ESR and Chrome being notable examples). $ apt-cache rdepends erlang-base | wc -l 283 See also: https://www.debian.org/security/faq#oldversion https://www.debian.org/releases/buster/amd64/release-notes/ch-information.en.html#browser-security In general it is possible to upload a newer version of a dependency to backports as well. For this particular case it appears the issue is with how the backport was made, so fixing it by bumping the version of its dependency is probably a bad idea.
