I too thoroughly recommend sane-airscan. Not only a free SANE backend but also very completent. Works OOTB with a wireless connection. With a USB connection on buster, ipp-usb (from the same link as above) is required and the printer side *must* be set up with a driverless print queue. -- Brian.
