My only purpose was to show how tr could be used to handle multiple characters as a delimiter either as tr -s '\\\|' '\|' or
tr -d '\\' when used with awk. Plus the use of awk's printf command to produce the output you wanted. Please explain what you are trying to do so we can be more helpful. -- *...Bob*
