Actually Chrony is as accurate as NTPd and perhaps more accurate. If I understand correctly Gene needs to synchronize a group of machine control computers. They don't care what time it really is as long as they all agree. I don't think that he would mind being a time island. BTW for controlling gadgets and machines I think that boards such as the Pyboard, the Teensies (Sparkfun) and the Feathers (Adafruit) may be much more suitable than the Pi. These boards have control/DSP oriented processors and lots of I/O instead of graphics and HDMI. They also run MicroPython. I haven't used it yet but I'm about to.
