I coming in, in the middle so forgive me if I repeat things. You can build the kernel using make [x,m,old]config, make clean, make dep, make bzImage, make modules, make install. To make things somewhat simpler, you can build the deb package and then do ar x <kernel-deb-package> this will give you three files.
