Hi

I've been working on fixing gnome (1) over the course of several days now
but haven't yet got it working.

I'm running unstable.

The problem is that when I start gnome there is no text nor pictures
associated with any of the menu items. The panel appears with
pictures but the background is black; there is no splash screen.

I have been downloading individual packages and dpkg -i'ing them and
fixing any errors (eg. xml-core would not install; the postinst script
gave some funny errors; I had to ar -x it; check the postinst script
etc.) but this is getting very tedious. And it's not yet making a
difference.

I do not want to remove gnome and reinstall (via my 56k modem) as that
would be quite slow (I don't have all the debs on the system) and it
may not fix the problem.

So, if anybody can tell me the name of the bit of software which
provides the menu text (I'm sure I reinstalled libglib, gnome-panel,
pango, anything I could see in aptitude but maybe I missed it) I would
be grateful.

(1) This particular problem is probably related to me running out of
space in / . I used parted to copy my /root to a much bigger
partition; I thought I had updated lilo and /etc/fstab to point to
the new / and I had but I accidentally went back to the old one a
    while later; aptitude dist-upgrade'd and then realised my mistake;
I went back to the new / and everything seemed OK except gnome.

I run windowmaker as a rule but the kids prefer gnome so I would
really like to get it working.
