I dimly remember various complaints that PATH now does not change if you become superuser. See e.g. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=918754 So it is not so much related to X but to your way to become superuser. Above bug report mentions this as a workaround: su - Have a nice day :) Thomas
