I'll be moving soon, and temporarily slumming it on dialup, bleagh. I set up an account on a low-cost dial-up ISP (they confirm connection is bog-standard, and no special software is required). I also installed wvdial and set up the account. Wvdial requires root to run !!! Testing it from root, it sees the login/password prompts and responds. The connection seems to be established, but nothing happens, and my external modem's lights stay solid. The same machine+modem did work with Redhat 7.3.
