I took a new tack, and tried an alsa installation. I'm running the stock 2.4.22 kitchen-sink kernel-image-2.4.22-1-686, and in downloaded alsa-base, alsa-utils-0.5, and alsa-modules-2.4.22-1-686. The debconf appeared to go fine (I picked the Intel 8x0 audio), and lspci and lsmod report:

I also installed alsa-mixer (and I made myself a member of the audio group, and I logged out/in). But I can't get any audio to play audibly via the sound control panel in gnome . . . . I'm stumped. Any and all additional help is welcome . . .
