Emacs has that feature. See the "read-only" text property in the following manual (info) page: (elisp) Special Properties https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/elisp/Special-Properties.html#Special-Properties In my other message in this thread I showed quick example functions for (1) making a buffer area read only and (2) removing read only properties.
