Recently I am using headless or sometimes visual virtualbox. If you want it headless virtualbox is better. There are packages to download. I don't know if and which work on jessie. I do not think you need a backup if you install the packages. If it installes well, you do not risk anything as the VM you create is isolated from the OS. You will need a netinstall iso image to create the OS. It works also straight forward. There are good howtos around. I saw the suggestion to use chroot, which is cheaper, but it might be that you get only older versions of ubuntu and debian. regards
