~/.mozilla isn't just for Firefox. .mozilla contains the Firefox (including Firefox-esr) and SeaMonkey data files (.mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini and .mozilla/seamonkey/profiles.ini) that enumerate the locations of the individual profiles (which need not live in .mozilla).
