I've always had no problem with autologin with lightdm, all I ever had to do was to set autologin-user in the [Seat:*] in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf . Another option that I have used successfuly is using lightdm-autologin-greeter and setting up autologin-user in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/lightdm-autologin-greeter.conf I guess you already checked this but double check you are able to login with that user using a password.
