One more data point. Just tried this on my (testing+sid) system, relatively up to date, and display does not work without the xwd: prefix. display does not seem to autorecognise xwd format files, as noted in the bug report. imagemagick version 8:6.9.7.4+dfsg-1 -- Eric S Fraga via Emacs 27.0.50 & org 9.1.6 on Debian buster/sid
