Check the BTS. I think version -7 fixes the conflicting file problem. I haven't seen a mention of this exact error message, but the python-python2.3 relationship has been discussed quite a bit on debian-python. There are reasons for and against a "backwards" dependecy on python from python2.3. This has been changing back and forth as various interactions and relationships are discovered and attempts are made to solve all of the problems simultaneously.
