That depends on your configuration; if you prefer mc's internal editor (mcedit) you can tell mc to use it, as described here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/16776/how-to-switch-the-editor-in-mc-midnight-commander-from-nano-to-mcedit (or simply open ~/.config/mc/ini and set use_internal_edit=1 ) If this is not set, mc will probably use $EDITOR, which probably defaults to nano on a newly installed debian system.
