Mplayer doesn't inherently understand French -- it will only be able to
identify the French soundtrack if said soundtrack has been properly marked
in the audio file you are trying to play. And that frequently isn't done.

You can identify audio tracks by number instead -- first play the file
interactively and use shift-3 if I recall correctly to step through the
tracks while keeping an eye on mplayer's output -- when you get to the
audio track you want, mplayer will have output its number.
