Basically you got it:

  sudo adduser <yourself> sudo

meaning "add yourself to the sudo group". But alas, you'd need sudo powers
to be able to do that... so what to do?

You'll have to get hold of root for once: do you have a root password?

If yes, then do

  su
  [enter root password]

then (as root now)

  adduser <yourself> sudo

...done. Now you can do sudo (assuming everything else is set up as default).

If you don't have a password for root, you'll have to boot once from a
rescue system (any live USB will do, as well as the installer CD/stick.
