It kinda sounds like you want to switch from mbox to maildir. What worked for me was to use mutt to do the conversion: set mbox_type="maildir" in .muttrc tag * in your mbox, save 'em all to a new "folder" location... mutt will prompt you to create the new maildir Maildir format (by definition) has one message per file. There are probably scripts/utilities to do the job right at the command line, but like I say... that's what worked for me.
