There is access to root in Knoppix. Don't remember exactly where, but in one of the menus there is an item 'Root shell' or some such. It opens a window with shell running as root. Also, Knoppix comes up with read-only access to your hard disks, once you have found root access, you can change this to rw. From there you can do just about anything, including installing a 'proper' Debian dist.
