Thanks, Nocolas.  But that still doesn't really explain it.  If $USER can 
access it, provided $USER is human, courtesy of the getty program, why can 
Xorg not access it via the getty program?  

And in what other ways does the system distinguish between human $USERs and 
non-human $USERs?  I didn't know that there were any.
