Using strace, the difference seems to be that apt-get clean removes
/var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin. However you don't need to run apt-get
update : this file seems to be rebuilt by any apt command.

apt-get clean
apt-cache show anypatternyoulike
apt-cache show pa<TAB><TAB>
