I also have this problem with a2ps, but with a HP LaserJet 5MP. I switched from lprng to cups thinking that might help, but there was no change; the problem persisted. Also, I am using US letter. I didn't report it or ask for help, because I had a higher priority problem at the time, and anyway discovered that a2ps did not really address the problem that I had at the time.
