telnet -e sets the escape key you want to use. In the short term, you can redefine an infrequently-used key to send the appropriate code, eg through /etc/console-setup/remap.inc, because it seems more likely that you'll get stuck in a session on a (possibly sole) VC than on X. Cheers, David.
