I've always preferred the latter. You can make a real comparison
between the two versions, and it gives you the most time to migrate
any incompatible changes in your data. (Spreadsheets caught me out on
the jessie upgrade.)

In the past I have shared /home, and dealt with dotfiles using links
like .config/mc/mc.ext → ext-<debian-codename> → a-version-of-the-file
but that's got complicated with browsers, so now I'm leaving /home
under /, and sharing only a non-dotfiles-partition.
