Setting it will not change the shape of circles in most applications. It will definitely not make the pixels square. To actually fix the problem, instead of following random suggestions given in the dark, Gene would need to help himself a bit more, starting by looking up the native resolution of his screen, then querying the actual resolution used by X11 (xdpyinfo) and checking which driver was selected by X.org (/var/log/Xorg.0.log).
