The fun never ends. I installed msmtp and as near as I can tell it works as advertised. My SMTP smarthost at Suddenlink.net presents the following banner which nicely explains what one needs to do to get real work done. I've had a little trouble getting msmtp to fit what is required. The documentation provided by Suddenlink says that smtp is provided on ports 25 and 587 and both display the following banner:
